Johann Sebastian Bach: Mass in B Minor, BWV 232
For this Good Friday, we present a work that is generally regarded as one of the supreme achievements of classical music, Bach’s monumental Mass in B minor. Bach worked more than half his life on this Mass, completing the final movements only in 1749, the year before he died. It was his last major undertaking and the glorious summation of all his musical knowledge. Signed, as were most of his compositions, with “S.D.G.” (Soli Deo gloria, “to God alone be the glory”), this sublime masterpiece by the “fifth evangelist” is a fitting work to honor this sacred day.
